Distribution network design has surged to become a top priority for supply chain leaders. Excess capacity and inefficient facilities cost businesses billions of dollars every year. This is being compounded by a surge in industrial rent throughout 2022.
In the last 2 weeks, Amazon US closed or abandoned dozens of warehouses and has delayed the opening of 24 facilities to better align with expected customer demand (Bloomberg, September 2, 2022).
Distribution network design specifies the locations of warehouses and how much product is allocated to each facility. The effective design of distribution networks is critical to meet both customer service targets and also cost objectives.
